MICHAEL WOZNIAK

Michael Wozniak is an Indigenous artist who uses photographs to document and interpret places that we instinctively look away from. Working from the conviction that a photograph is an opportunity to understand new perspectives, Wozniak aims to expand his own grasp of that which he photographs. While at the same time, to challenge wilful ignorance and prejudice. His principal formats include digital and film photographs.

Wozniak was born in 1986 in Toronto, Canada and graduated from Carleton University with a B.A. in 2009. He has studied formally at the School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa (SPAO), though much of his understanding of the photographic process is shaped by personal experience and self-learning.

Deeply analytical and reflective, Wozniak seeks to avoid the trappings of ' exposé' photography, and instead prefers to lead viewers through his provocative and interpretive process. By photographing that which we are taught to ignore or look away from, Wozniak aims to eliminate barriers to understanding and tolerance.
